According to Aristotle, Cratylus (a pre-socratic philosopher and eponymous
'hero' of a Platonic dialogue) believed in the Heraclitean concept of flux
(although, unlike Heraclitus himself Cratylus believed that one could not
walk into the same river even once) and as he grew older tried to respond to
the ever-coming-into-existence-and-fading-away of all objects by firstly
hissing words and turning toward the object of inquiry in an attempt to
capture its quiddity and then, ultimately, by doing nothing more than
pointing a finger at the object, silently.

I raise this obscure piece of philosophical memorabilia to suggest the
possibly fundamental importance of finger-pointing to achieve ones meaning -
all would seem to rest on your positioning regarding the idea of 'flux' and
the degree to which one can ever capture a world undergoing constant change.

Rob,

Addressing myself, I've asked: how to make a gesture to a group which
invites others to avoid finger-pointing while avoiding fingerpointing in
my gesture?

Recurrently,
Rob
