One more point that escaped being sent before.
To me using poison to produce food is like making a hole in the bottom of a
rowing-boat while you are on route for the far side of the lake because
there is water coming in. (and that is an original quote as far as I know)
To me any use of pesticides creates an ecological problem, even Bt.
I think I have told this story before on sanet. My gooseberries were being
eaten by sawflie larvae. I sprayed Bt and killed the sawflie but I also
killed the parasitic wasp maggots that were in the sawflie larvae.
This cycle was repeated year after year.
I only got on top of the sawflies by giving up the spraying and letting the
wasps do the job for me! And for the rest, intercropping, diversity and good
compost take care of almost everything else. (except for big rodents and
ungulates)
"I can't stop using poison..." is the same as saying "I can't stop bashing
holes in my boat for there is too much water coming in".

That I find this stupid has nothing to with me being left or right of the
political spectrum. Think for a moment : how many people buy a new vehicle
because the old one is beyond repair? People usually don't "need" the latest
Suv. They buy one because they are unhappy and frustrated with life in
general perhaps and the new Suv is making them feel better for a very short
time.
Industry NEEDS unhappiness. Happy people don't buy! They have no need for
it!
The chemical industry also is like a perpetuum mobile. Every time one uses a
pesticide a new ecological imbalance is created and that can be filled with
a new pesticide that makes a new hole that can be cured with a new pesticide
but by doing that a new hole is made and so on. Brilliant for the economy in
the same way as a disaster improves the GNP. Sustainable in an ecological
sense it is not.
John
