There was a wonderful piece in Resurgence mag a couple years ago by a native South American (I've forgotten the particulars) in which he said [paraphrasing], "What the Europeans took from the New World, historians agree, fueled the late Renaissance and Industrial Revolution and basically created the wealth they now enjoy. We in the South know that the Europeans wouldn't want it to be thought that they just raped and pillaged the entire New World to get that loot. And we're willing to look at it differently, too. So let's agree that what was taken from us in the 1500s to 1900s was a development loan. Okay, now pay it back, with interest."
