Aloha,
Aldous Huxley is best known for his dark and pessimistic "Brave New World"
(not to be confused...or is it?...with "new world order"...).
However, he got over it as he got older and wiser, and his last complete
book was an IMO excellent 'utopian' novel entitled 'Island'.
He appears to have done some protracted and thoughtful observation of what
the pathological patterns in his and similar cultures were, and then he
came up with different patterns, portrayed in the novel, that are most
often wholistic and systemic and designerly. That the whole 'experiment'
was started by a 'Westerner' and an 'Easterner' in collaboration is a nice
touch.
The fact that the 'Island' manner of living is threatened most by
oil-greed outsiders makes it frighteningly contemporary - Huxley didn't
become a *complete* optimist...
