Perhaps at the time he started, there were hundreds of thousands very
ready to observe his example and emulate it. He had around him hundreds
of thousands (millions and millions probably) of people stewing from
decades of explicit colonial opression and exploitation. Perhaps they
hadn't though of nonviolent civil diobedience, perhaps they were afraid to
be the first to try it, I don't know...but his example appears to have
been a catalyst in the right place at the right time (without a suitable
context, even the best catalyst may have no effect).
