What about setting up a small flowform display, recycling the water back up
to the top again? Artistic, functional, aestheticly pleasing, makes nice
relaxing sounds, water movement to attract attention. Add some
waterchestnuts, taro and the like.

As a conversation starter, it could lead into discussion of greywater
systems, reedbed filters, water harvesting, aquaculture etc. etc.
The flowforms are reasonably portable, easy to set up. If you have time or
creative friends, you might be able to sculpt up some scale model size
flowforms and run the whole system with a DC voltage aquarium pump.
