bi-yearly or every 10 or?) without killing it so that it regrows. The
regrowth is typically straight. Basket willow is coppiced, as was Cercis
occidentalis, Cali redbud, for basket withies.
If you cut it up above browse line, it's pollarding.
There is chestnut coppice in Britain that quite possibly has been worked
since the species was introduced by the Romans, so it's quite sustainable.
It is much easier to mulch straight withies than branchy ol' things. Or feed
them to stock (or microlivestock like silkworms)
