That was pretty much my guess. There are cultivated ceanothus that can take
some irrigation you can use in inner zones, but they're all excellent mulch
and compost stock, as well as herbals and insectary plants. Regularly
coppiced shrubs can be much easier to harvest than unmanaged shrubs. The
pine straw is fine mulch too, and often easy to gather. Have you ever eaten
the pine nuts?
