On January 26, an earthquake measuring a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter Scale struck western India. The earthquakes caused damage across the state of Gujarat and affected Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Reports estimate that 20,000 are dead, 68,000 have been injured, and 600,000 have been made homeless and are sleeping outside in tents and other accommodations. 37 million people were affected by the quake. Approximately 15,000 primary schools were destroyed, along with other infrastructure such as electric, water, sanitation, and transportation.

Action Against Hunger (AAH)
(February 1, 2001)
AAH is sending a team to Gujarat to assess the needs of the population. AAH will focus on access to safe drinking water, the condition of sanitation infrastructures, and food. The program will be implemented in partnership with local Indian NGOs, to whom AAH will bring additional support and technical skills.

Initial efforts are on locating survivors and emergency relief.

American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)
(January 29, 01)
AFSC is assessing emergency needs in coordination with its partners and will support ongoing relief efforts of these and other local agencies.  Preliminary information points to unmet needs for food, water, sanitation and shelter.

American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC)
(February 6, 01)
AJJDC is coordinating with the Vagad Medical Relief Trust in distributing tents, food, water, and other essential items in the Bachau region. AJJDC will work with CRY (Children, Relief and You) to provide needed supplies to orphanages and transit relief camps. Intermediate- and longer-term initiatives in areas such as school and clinic rebuilding and trauma relief training are being discussed with the Self-Employed Women's Association.

American Jewish World Service (AJWS)
(January 26, 01)
AJWS will be providing food and medicine. They will be working with local grassroots organizations and the Jewish Community in Ahmedabad.

American Red Cross (ARC)
(February 5, 01)
ARC has deployed a team of relief experts to support the work of the Indian Red Cross. ARC has committed $25,000 in cash and almost $580,000 for the procurement of relief supplies including 550 rolls of plastic sheeting, 15,000 blankets, 13,000 water containers, 4 WHO New Emergency Health Kits, 8,340 tarps, and 8,000 kitchen sets.

Ananda Marga Universal Relief Teams (AMURT)
(February 8, 01)
AMURT has set up three relief camps in Gandhidham, Anjar and Bhuj and is providing cooked food, wheat flour, plastic sheeting and medical care to over 6,000 people daily in the urban areas and surrounding villages. AMURT has also disposed of 700 bodies and performed their last rites. AMURT is exploring constructing houses in the rehabilitation phase.


Baptist World Aid (BWAid)
(January 29, 01)
BWAid has committed an initial $10,000 to earthquake relief in India. BWAid will fund the work of indigenous Indian Christian partner groups and Hungarian Baptist Aid, which has a Special Rescue Team in Gujarat.

Brother's Brother Foundation (BBF)
(January 30, 01)
BBF will assist the victims of India's earthquake.

CARE
(January 26, 01)
CARE is providing emergency materials, such as food, blankets, water purification tablets, and shelter supplies.

Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB)
(January 30, 01)
CMMB sent an emergency grant of $25,000 to be used for the local purchase of needed medical supplies and medicines. CMMB's local partners are making assessments, and CMMB will send an emergency airlift upon the receipt of specific requests.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS)
(January 26, 01)
CRS has approved an initial emergency allocation of $50,000. CRS’s office in Bombay is working with local partners on the ground to identify critical needs and implement the emergency response.

Christian Children’s Fund (CCF)
(January 26, 01)
CCF has designated $250,000 for initial emergency relief efforts. CCF is sending in emergency response assessment teams that will begin rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Included in these efforts will be establishment of family centers to provide immediate emergency food and medical assistance. CCF works in 6 affiliated projects within the area affected by the earthquake.

Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC)

(January 29, 01)
CRWRC will be providing food and housing supplies to earthquake victims through the Evangelical Fellowship of India Commission on Relief (EFICOR) and Mission India.

Church World Service (CWS)
(January 26, 01)
CWS is responding through long-time partner Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), which is providing shelter, food, drinking water, and other relief items. CASA is working with local partners in the area, which include the Protestant and Catholic churches as well as the YMCA.

Concern Worldwide US
(January 26, 01)
Concern Worldwide has dispatched an Emergency Response Team from its Indian base of operations in Orissa. An initial sum of $60,000 has been made available to the team.

Counterpart International
(February 8, 01)
Counterpart is assessing the situation, and will respond accordingly. Counterpart plans to provide aid in the rural areas of Gujarat and will focus on providing assistance in the post-emergency period. Counterpart is currently implementing a child survival program in Gujarat.

Direct Relief International
(February 5, 01)
Direct Relief has
airlifted more than 32,000 pounds representing a $1.2 million contribution of medical commodities to its partner agency serving hospitals and clinics in the affected area. Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD)
(February 1, 01)

ERD has
given a $25,000 emergency grant to Bishop Malaviya in the Diocese of Gujarat in North India. ERD is sending an additional $25,000 to the National Church to support the larger relief efforts. ERD will also assist in rehabilitation.

Food for the Hungry
(February 5, 01)
Food for the Hungry is working with the Emmanuel Hospital Association and the Evangelical Fellowship of India's Commission on Relief to distribute tents, food and medicine to 125,000 people in Gujurat. Food for the Hungry has worked in India since 1998.

Heart to Heart International
(February 1, 01)
Heart to Heart is procuring requested medicines, medical supplies and personal hygiene items, with a goal of delivering $1 million in aid. Heart to Heart has received a commitment of transportation and logistical support from Federal Express to fly disaster supplies directly to Gujarat.

International AID
(January 29, 01)
International Aid likely will partner with Mission India to help the earthquake victims in India.  International Aid is also exploring sending relief items such as blankets and medicines.

(January 29, 01)
International Relief Teams will send an emergency shipment of relief supplies to the affected areas.

Latter-day Saint Charities (LDSC)
(January 30, 01)
LDSC is donating more than 600,000 pounds of relief supplies, including food, blankets, clothing, and medical supplies. LDSC has donated $40,000 for the local purchase of blankets, medicine and kitchen supplies for refugee camps and given $25,000 to the Prime Minister's fund to assist search and rescue operations and establish temporary shelters.

Lutheran World Relief
(February 1, 01)

Mobile teams from Churches Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), an LWR partner organization, have set up multiple centers where they are preparing and distributing food, water and emergency supplies. CASA is assisting approximately 35,000 people in and around Bhuj, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Ratanpur, and Ghandidham. LWR has committed an initial $25,000 for relief efforts and has participated in additional emergency funding through Action by Churches Together (ACT). MAP International

MAP International is providing assistance with medical and health requirements. Assessment of needs and logistics is currently underway.

Mercy Corps International

Mercy Corps'
  Global Emergency Operations team is working with local partners to deliver emergency supplies and develop longer-term assistance strategies. Mercy Corps is airlifting blankets, plastic sheeting and other rovisional shelter materials in partnership with Direct Relief International. Mercy Corps also supported the air shipment of $1.15 million in medical supplies, including analgesics, anti-inflammatory agents, sutures, wound care kits, needles, syringes and gloves delivered to Rajastan Hospital in Ahmedabad and other clinics and emergency health facilities.

Mercy-USA for Aid and Development (MUSA)

Northwest Medical Teams International
(January 29, 01)
Northwest Medical Teams is sending a ten person medical team to Gujarat on January 31. The team will work in partnership with the Church of North India, the Emmanuel Hospital Association and other church-related groups. In addition, Northwest Medical Teams has sent medical supplies valued at $25,000 and a donation of $10,000 in cash to be used by its partners for the purchase of food, water and other items needed by those who are homeless.

Operation USA

Operation USA is providing funds and bulk corporate contributions of medical supplies and equipment and water purification and shelter materials.

Oxfam America
(February 5, 01)
Oxfam has provided water and sanitation equipment and expertise to communities and hospitals. Through partner organizations, Oxfam is also providing temporary shelter, food, blankets, warm clothing, and cooking and eating implements. Oxfam was already working in the region when the earthquake struck and will continue to work with civil society organizations who are monitoring aid distribution and planning for rebuilding.

is assessing the situation and sending an Emergency Relief Team of medical and public health specialists. The team will provide medical care and assistance, working in collaboration with national authorities, local NGOs and international organizations on the ground.

Salvation Army World Service Office
(January 26, 01)
The Salvation Army is providing food, clothing, shelter, and counseling.

Save the Children
(February 5, 01)

Save is
providing health care services and emergency shelter and initiating the reconstruction of primary schools, health centers and water systems. Save received $1.5 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to carry out relief and rehabilitation efforts in India and El Salvador.

United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR)
(January 26, 01)
UMCOR is responding through ACT (Action by Churches Together) and CASA (Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action). In addition to immediate humanitarian relief, UMCOR will assist with long-term rebuilding and recovery.

United Way International (UWI)
(January 26, 01)
UWI’s member organization in Gujarat, United Way of Baroda, is working in partnership with another local charity, the Baroda Citizen’s Council. Both organizations are currently focusing on provision of medical supplies to communities near the epicenter, and will be following up with a long-term recovery plan once the initial crisis response period is over. US Fund for UNICEF

UNICEF is providing emergency medicine, shelter, blankets, clean water, and psycho-social trauma counseling. World Concern

World Concern partners will purchase food, clothing, and medical supplies. One World Concern partner is CASA (Churches Auxiliary for Social Action).

World Relief

World Relief is working with church partners to provide emergency shelter, food, water, and medicines to villages in the district of Kachchh in the state of Gujarat. World Relief is considering building earthquake resistant housing in the villages as the next phase

World Vision
(February 1, 01)
World Vision has
a relief program which will reach 75,000 people in the next 30 days. Food, water, clothing, and temporary shelter will be the main focus of World Vision's work in meeting the immediate needs of the most affected populations.
