Miekal,
Do you have mulch piled around the tree trunks? Like snow, it gives mice
cover and should be kept back a few inches from the trunks at their bases.
Rabbits (mmm, good!) will need chicken wire (couple loose wraps) or some
such protection.
Hard to say how much cambium girdled trees need to survive, but trees can
be very resilient in terms of survival. . . on the other hand, they might
not regain full health, size or productivity easily. Good luck, let us know
how they're doing later in the season!
