There are RSS feeds for content-driven websites but some of these offer XML
feeds.
What exactly are the implications for this?
Here are definitions I Googled:
Definitions of XML Feed on the Web:
* A simplified version of HTML that allows data to be sent to search
engines in the format that they can interpret.
www.awsp.com/search-engine-glossary.html
* Also referred to as Trusted Feed. A process where web pages are fed into the search engine index for maximum keyword exposure. More commonly used for database driven sites where multiple search queries can apply.

I think XML feed is just another name for RSS/Atom feeds.
There is also the OpenSearch format http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenSearch
And google sitemaps which give google a few hints on how to search and display results from your website
