Muffy,
I'm at Hopkinsville.
Pears, persimmons, mulberries are easy here; apples... less so - we went
overboard planting apples when we moved here 25 yrs ago... granted, I'm
sure I planted some varieties that were totally inappropriate, and with a
full time job in town, 4 kids, and a growing beef herd, the orchard was
pretty much left to its own devices - no pruning, no spraying, no
fertilizing. Survivors worthy of remaining have been: MonArk, Winesap,
Centennial, Kerr, Bastian Orange, and Almata (last 4, all crabs) . Only
stonefruit that performs reasonably here in our orchard are Chickasaw plums.
Pecans (scab-resistant, mostly 'northern' varieties), hickories, black
walnuts do just fine here.
Wonder if the black currant person you were referring to was Richard
Moyer? Seems like he did a sabbatical at Corvallis some years ago
