We had a bad drought a couple of years ago and I lost two mature oak trees
and some rhododendrons. I lost 90% of a rhododendron that was 50 years old.

Even trees with extensive root systems can be killed by drought. (Although of
course a limited root system doesn't help.)

This last summer I watered. Not often. But each valuable tree got at least
one deep watering in the worst of it.
