not quite a fruit topic per se, but I'm sure its pertinent to at least some
of you NAFEX'ers. I have long wondered what became of the 40 odd improved
strains of Apios americana (groundnut) from the LSU breeding program. Does
anyone have any of these improved strains, or know of a source for any of
them? The wild ones are so small, its surprising that the larger improved
forms have not been more widely disseminated. From the pictures I have seen,
it seems that yield and harvestibility are dramatically improved. I'd love to
be growing some, but despite years of haphazardly searching, haven't turned
up a source. It sounds like some of the LSU varieties are not suited to
northern regions, while others may be. Anyone have info to share?
thanks,
Devin Smith

I've found it useful while doing my own research (on Ceratonia) to do
occasional searches through Twitter. This article I found linked to there
mentions Steven Cannon at Iowa State U/USDA having 60 varieties he's been
working on.

http://www.iowastatedaily.com/news/article_c7876aa8-7d77-11e3-8584-001a4bcf887a.html
I also found this reference to someone breeding some:
http://radix4roots.blogspot.it/2013/03/apios-americana-life-liberty-and.html
A reference to variety 'Nutty', saying it was bred in Louisiana:
http://twitpic.com/7bi713
This article mentions groundnut breeding wrapping up at LSU and mentions
the "baton being passed" to Steven Cannon at Iowa State.

Hope that helps,
