My trees from them last year can hardly be said to have any roots left at
all. The bottom of the trees were barely any thicker than the tops. Much to
my surprise, they survived and grew, although I'm sure they're smaller than
they would have been if they hadn't been sheared like that. Good luck with
yours.

Hi all,
I just received my Bay Laurel Nursery order today and was shocked at the
butchered condition of the roots!!! I would estimate that on average,
they were only 5" or so long!!! This is for trees of
their normal good quality of possibly 3/4 " caliper. I have never had
trees arrive from ANY nursery with such small root systems. I am wondering
if any of you have gotten similar trees from them this year, and/or any
advice for how to keep these trees alive. It was an absolute breeze
planting these trees of course, since they required tiny tiny holes to be
dug! But that doesn't console me. I wanted fruit from these trees! Also,
the info they sent with the trees stated to use EXTERIOR latex to paint the
trunks, whereas I had heard most sources state to use INTERIOR. I have
emailed them asking about the paint and suggesting that they pay an
unannounced visit to their shipping department to see the size of the roots
on the trees they are sending out. Anyway I am hoping to hear back from
other NAVEXers about the trees they have gotten this year from Bay Laurel.

I have gotten similar butcher jobs from them in past years. Now I order my
Dave Wilson stock through either Sanhedrin or Peaceful Valley, neither of
them chop the roots so severely. While many of my Bay Laurel trees did OK,
some of them died. If they die they should replace them for free. I have
also heard that they will ship with full roots if requested in advance.
