I have read that people used to look for elderberry plants when trying to decide where to dig a well because elderberries grow where water is within 10 feet of the surface.

We have elderberries growing wild around the farm. Most are along the
edges of buildings where birds roost. They do well with damp (not
soggy) soil. Ours can get very weedy and require hacking down.

Note that the plant is toxic to livestock so you should avoid planting
where animals graze or browse.
