Scott Smith just pointed me to genetic research showing 'Montmorency' to be
true sour-cherry (P. cerasus):
Genetic relationships between diploid and allotetraploid cherry species
(Prunus avium, Prunus x gondouinii and Prunus cerasus)
However, there are many catalogues (including St. Lawrence, etc.) that
identify it as a P. avium (sweet-cherry) x P. tomentosa (Nanking-cherry)
hybrid!
Why is widely considered a hybrid cherry, rather then a true sour-cherry P.
cerasus (which started of course as a hybrid).
