Subject: [nafex ibiblio list] Temperate Heart of Palm and Fruiting Palm
Varieties

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone know of palms that are good for heart of palm
production that can be grown in zone 8.  I know that the common palmettos
are edible but grow very slowly.  While on the topic, anyone have any
recommendations for edible fruiting palms as well?  There are a lot of
trees around here that drop really sweet yellow fruit, but I'm not sure if
they are safe or good for eating--any thoughts?

Thanks and happy holidays,

Chris Carnevale

Dear Lon,

In October, Seed Savers Exchange broke ground on an expansion of our Historic
Apple Orchard that will help us protect over 350 of our country's rarest and
most valuableapple varieties. Like all of our preservation efforts here at
Heritage Farm, we are depending on your generous support to make this project
a reality.

The orchard expansion will help us make historic apple varieties available
through the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook—apples that speak to the breadth of
our nation’s cultural heritage: the ‘Gravenstein’ apple that found a home in
California and fed the troops in WWII, the ‘Ben Davis’ and the ‘Arkansas
Black’ varieties that let Southern travelers know they were home, the ‘Rhode
Island Greening’ and ‘Newton Pippin’ apples beloved by New Englanders, and
‘Wealthy’ and ‘Fameuse’ apples that have stood up to harsh Midwestern winters
for over a century.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help us continue to
protect genetic diversity through projects like the orchard expansion.

Thank you for helping us preserve historic apple varieties for generations to
come.

Sincerely yours,

Diane Ott Whealy
Co-founder and Vice President

P.S. Supporters who pledge $150 or more will receive the commemorative Seed
Savers Exchange 2012 Calendar, a beautiful seasonal glimpse of the heirloom
vegetables harvested from SSE’s Heritage Farm.

These trees grew by chance and traveled with us for hundreds of years, but
without care they will be lost forever along with the history they carry. The
9.5 acre expansion of SSE’s Historic Orchard will help us preserve over 350
rare apple varieties.

Ben Davis

The 'Ben Davis' apple appeared as a seedling in an orchard in the early 1800s
in Virginia. By the end of the century, it was the most popular and widely
grown apple in America. It has a medium-to-large fruit with waxy, tough skin,
and yellow-tinged, juicy, slightly acid flesh. A good market apple, it can be
kept until late spring.

Calville Blanc d'Hiver

This variety can be traced back to 17th century France—a great keeping apple
that holds its shape when baking, and its vitamin C content is said to rival
that of oranges!

Our Mission

To save North America's diverse but endangered garden heritage for future
generations by building a network of people committed to collecting,
conserving, and sharing heirloom seeds and plants, while educating people
about the value of genetic and cultural diversity. Learn More
