The experience with VVA-1 and dwarfing varies from species to species
grafted to it. Even variety to variety. Reports I see seem to indicate it is
more
dwarfing for plums and apricots than peaches. Received a call this morning
from a very knowledgeable grower and NAFEX member that reported on some
peaches it are only about 80% dwarfing.
I would expect soils to make a difference also.
The current issue of "Journal of the American Pomological Society" Has a
report of the NC-140 Peach rootstock trials. The NC-140 trails is a joint
University researcn project using 17 sites and over 10 rootstock varieties
including Krymsk 1 & 2. Peaches used were: Redtop, Cresthaven and Redhaven.
The
published results are from 2002 to 2006.
I'm extracting two sentences from the report.
" Two of the rootstocks, Pumiselect and Krymsk-2 exhibited many problems
with survival, computability, suckering and fruit size"
"Krymsk-1 shows a tendency to have slightly higher cropping efficiency than
the other rootstocks."
My summation, all things considered, peaches on Krymsk-1 did very well.
This limited number of liners is made available to NAFEX and INGA members for
back yard growers to test.
