Hi mIEKAL,

I am listing papaws that have ripened before or at the same day as P. A. Golden 1. Green River Belle is the most consistent in ripening with PAG1.
Green River Belle
Wilson
Overleese
Sun Glow
Sue

I received my P. A. Golden scion wood from John Gordon as scion wood and did the grafting myself. I believe the PAG 1 is the common cultivar found in the trade. I do not have enough harvest data for cultivars other than PAG1 to make any comments regarding whether they are early or not.

Everyone appears to have forgotten about Corwin Davis from Michigan. He introduced a number of selections that might warrant another look at to see if they will ripen in the colder zones. They do not produce fruit that I would brag about for me but....may worth looking at. They are Davis, Taylor, Taytwo, and Tollgate. They all ripen in the first week of October in Michigan. They ripen about a week later than PAG1 in Cincinnati.

I think that you are on the right track by planning seeds and see how they perform. I do believe that pawpaws have the genetics to ripen in colder climates than we realize or have exploited.

Ron

The PA golden that I'm growing are from seeds from John Gordon, a
breeder in upstate NY. As far as I know they aren't delineated by a
number. What are the other early varieties that are early ripeners?
This is the first time I'm hearing that there are other varieties that
might work in Wisconsin. The new batch of seed that I'm growing out
from John Gordon are a mix of all his genetics.

I have 5 years of pawpaw production data in USDA Zone 6 and PA Golden is not
necessarily the earliest cultivar to ripen! It is among a group of pawpaws
to ripen early but certainly not the earliest. Which PA Golden are you
talking about? I am growing at least 4 different PA Golden cultivars 1, 2,
3, & 4. I think that you have a good idea but may want to consider
broadening your list of pawpaws to cross.

As a followup thought. Perhaps a reason to plant some of those other
varieties up here in the far northern reaches of pawpaw possibilities
would be to create some crosses with the PA Golden. Even if the fruit
wouldn't ripe up here, perhaps the flowering times would similar in
the spring.

Now that I've been able to get PA Golden to ripen here in WI, I wonder
if Sunflower or Prolific would have any chance to get close to
ripening. I'm assuming all pawpaw varities would be cold hardy here
but the issue is length of growing season for far northern growers.
