The other day I was thinking about all the agricultural problems that come
about from imports. When I lived in Berkeley I was in a light brown apple
moth quarantine zone and now in South Pasadena I'm in an asian citrus
psyllid quarantine zone. It's the moving of plant materials that brings this
about. So my mind got to thinking about what fruits I'd have in my area if I
were left to purely native plants, not any of the European stone fruit, etc.
that I so love. It's an interesting exercise. I guess you could extend the
range to 25 - 50 mi of you. What fruits/nuts would you have if you were
limited to this?
I can think of CA native fruits but Southern CA seems poorer in them than
Northern CA was.
Various oak acorns, of course.
Possibly beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis).
Prickly Pear (Opuntia)
Hollyleaf Cherry (Prunus ilicifolia)
What fruit would you be limited to if you could only grow what was native to
your area? (This is an exercise for fun, not for advocating that people do
that.)
