Dr. Pitman,
My main complaint with GM plants and animals (salmon) is that the producers want to keep it secret from consumers.
A few years ago there was an initiative on the Oregon ballot that GM foods would have to say so on the label. A poll showed that a large majority was in favor. But then the big money started coming in from distributors saying that many grocers would go broke if they had to include such information on the label. The money for advertising rivaled that of "Big Tobacco" for its campaigns, and by election day the initiative failed by a huge margin.
I can pick up a can of Coke and see on the label if it has caffeine or not, and I can pick up a can of soup and see how much sodium it has without any grocers going broke. But they say it would be too expensive to label if it is GM.
There should be transparency so people can make informed choices.

I'm not planting food crops for mass consumption, but I'm not afraid of GMO
crops. If I could get apple trees that incorporate some bacterial/fungal
gene that targets curculio, codling moth, or apple maggot, you'd better
believe I'd plant them - and would have no qualms about eating the fruit or
offering it to my kids, friends, or co-workers.
