I think you find these out of season at the moment.  Late June and July are the times to do it.

I have the same experience.  I can get a good harvest of berries and then the bushes defoliate.  I am going to move a few bushes to spread them out more as I noticed that my black currants that have more space around them tend to have fewer symptoms.

The plants that have defoliated have done so every year for 5 years.
