Thanks Ed,
My soil qualifies as relatively poor --
little topsoil, mostly clay. So closer spacing would be okay,
generally speaking. As for varieties: Albermarle(Newton)Pippen,
Ashmead's Kernal, Hudson's Golden Gem, Golden Delicious, Liberty, Cox's Orange
Pippen...
If you're willing, I'd also appreciate your
thoughts on the recommended row spacing (14ft.) With just two rows
(oriented basically east-west) and no "drive-through" equipment, could I
nudge them a couple of feet closer without impacting yield? I have
the space to space rows 14ft. but am always looking to make the most
of what little space I have.
Thanks again, Rich

spacing
Rich:
This spacing is a generic (one
set fits all) recommendation.
If you soil is
relatively (or better) fertile, I'd go at least 8' between trees. If it
is relatively poor (compacted clays with little top soil, for example) I'd
space them at 5 to 5.5' between trees.
Also
very low vigor (and precocious) varieties should be taken into
consideration.
Would you want to post the
varieties?

Most of the web-based guides recommend at least 6 ft. in-row
spacing and 14 ft. between rows. I'm curious to know how others
have spaced their dwarf apples and how it's working out. I'd
appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
Rich
