Depending on cultivar, they are small to large bushes with brittle stems (except for new growth).  Fruit tends to be tubular in shape, and many people think it reminds them of blueberries.  However, it is more tender and soft.  I doubt they would ship very well if allowed to ripen.  The ripe fruit stains and is easily damaged with handling.  I think it is a very worthwhile addition to my garden.  Fruit ripens before strawberries and blueberries here (most varieties).  I seem to have better results with the later blooming selections due to lack of pollinators when the earlier ones bloom.

There are many good pictures on the web.  Google "honeyberry" or check on-line catalogs of Raintree or One Green World for variety names (esp. OGW) for pictures or varieties currently available in the states.

The ones I grow tend to be stressed a bit during August and September heat/lack of water here, but cold does not seem to bother them so far in zone 5.

Jim,
I live in NW FL and am puzzled as to what blue honeysuckle is. Here we have a flowering vine called honeysuckle which has very fragrant yellow and white flowers. It spreads by layering itself---profusely. What is your honeysuckle like?
Many thanks for sharing the recipe!

The ones I have taste WONDERFUL!  I bought cultivars Blue Bird and Berry
Blue from Burnt Ridge Nursery.  Like many fruits, they need to be cooked to
bring out the best flavor but they are tasty eaten fresh and better with a
pinch of Splenda.  I microwave a half handful until they burst, then smash
with a table fork.  Add a half cup of oatmeal, a cup of water, 5 packets of
Splenda (I like sweet oatmeal) and microwave on high for 2-1/4 minutes and
enjoy.
