There is a Chinese Quince in my area at a friends house. I collect her fruit and make a nice wine from it. The fruit, after cooking and sweetening, has the taste similair to cranberry sauce. Like pears, it can be a little gritty though.

In all the recent discussion of quinces/flowering quinces, no one has mentioned(or maybe I just missed it) the ‘Chinese quince’ – Pseudocydonia sinensis.

I’ve got two seedlings growing here, courtesy of my friend Pete,  several years back, and farmed several others out to coworkers/friends.

Mine are still too young to fruit, but from photos I’ve seen of the plant, it looks like a great ornamental addition to a landscape planting, with its handsome exfoliating bark – like a crape myrtle or colorful sycamore, glossy green leaves – that have great red-orange fall color here –  pink spring flowers, and what seems to be a pretty large fruit, if firm and tart/astringent.

Anybody care to comment further?
