A few years ago I read an article written by Frederick Coville, a botanist for the USDA who pioneered developing blueberry varieties in the early 20th century. He said that the results of various wild crosses were planted in the test field, and then he went through it tasting them and saving only the ones with the best flavor to be released for commercial production.
