The book “Ice Ages: Solving the Mystery”, first published in the 1970’s, is a worthwhile historical review of our efforts in understanding the mechanism of the ice ages, starting from the time that people realized that great ice sheets explained geological formations better than the Great Flood.

In that sense, the central cause of global warming and cooling (the Milankovitch cycles) has been generally accepted for decades, although there are still arguments around some issues.  For example, the insolation changes are generally slight, so feedback mechanisms (i.e. albedo changes, greenhouse gas release) are invoked to explain the observed changes.

Although there is this underlying driver for the ice age cycles, other disruptions are still possible.  For example, large volcanic events and comet/asteroid impacts are known to cause global disruptions, and they don’t follow the orbital cycles.  Time will tell if the rapid release of fossil carbon that’s happening now will deserve similar merit.

In any case, planetary physics is fascinating IMO.

I'll bet Al Gore who has made millions off global warming doesn't buy into this. This would end his gravy train.
