Brian,

One of the latest Fruit Grower News showed a CA atmosphere very low cost.  They basically wrapped a pallet with cellophane and used a CO2 bottle to provide the CO2.  I think it was in the July issue, but I'm not sure.  I throw the issues away once I read them, I need to stop doing that.

Subject: [NAFEX] Controlled Atmosphere Storage information

All,

In looking over my plans for my cider business, I know that somehow I’ll need to store the apples away until we’re ready to process them.  Controlled Atmosphere (CA) might be the answer.

I am having difficulty finding information on the web regarding the cost of constructing a (CA) storage unit.  The only information that I found so far is the link below:

http://www.mwps.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=c_Products.viewProduct&catID=714&productID=9218&skunumber=NRAES-22&crow=6#

Does anyone have recommendation of resources that I can check into?  I’m estimating that if all the fields are planted and are producing at maximum (about 4 bushels a tree for the M-7 rootstock),  I’ll be needing to store about 1,300 bushels of apples.

Probably more to ask but I’ll stop at this for now.  If you have any other storage recommendation, please let me know.  Don’t know if CA will be cost effective for me.
