Ernest, of course you're so right, I lost my head with the excitement thinking that SOMETHING was actually growing and maybe salvageable.

Guess I just have to dig the whole thing up and think about whether I'm brave enough to try something else there.

Thanks,

Caren.

A sucker from the ground is coming from the rootstock and will not be
a Reliance peach.

Quick update for anyone interested: I went to check out the Reliance
again yesterday and saw that it has a sucker. This has given me hope
that we can cut away the dead tree and maybe see if the sucker will
replace it - IF it survives the next winter.

There may be hope yet!

Hi Steve and Peter,

Thanks for asking, unfortunately my Golden Russet and my Reliance
have showed no signs of revival. In fact the Golden Russet has just
got drier and drier. We noticed a strange phenomenon on the Reliance
trunk; it seems to have little dots of orange. Being a complete
novice, I don't have any experiences with tree diseases. Could this
be a form of rust, maybe CAR? I didn't think peaches could get it,
but hey, what do I know! I guess whatever it is we should cut it down
right away to be sure.

I am reallly not having a good year fruit wise. Between losing
these 2 and my cherries being infested with ants, it's a bit of a
sucky year.

Hi All,

re: Reliance Peach

I thought my Reliance was a goner also. I cut
it down this spring from a height of about 8 feet to a height of
about 18-22 inches which included one branch
on two sides. Both these branches had signs of viable buds
but I was not too optimistic since all other buds were not budding
and looked definitely dead.
However, the tree has rebounded wonderfully with much new
growth.

Caren,
It's been 5 or 6 weeks since your wrote the post below. Did your
apple
tree ever grow leaves?

In a previous post I lamented at the state of my golden russet
apple and
reliance peach that I planted last year that did not leaf out. Well,
I
think the peach has really had it, seems brittle and can't find any
green under the bark. Probably should just get the inevitable over
and
done with and remove it and plant something else. RIP.

However the apple, while having no leaves is still supple and if you
scratch away the bark, it's green underneath. Does this mean that
there
is still hope? If so what can I do to regenerate it?

Any suggestions welcome.
