There was a lengthy discussion - it may still be there - on the GardenWeb Forums within the last year or so on squirrel elimination and one other particularly effective method was the 'Bucket o' Death' - a large trashcan, filled about half-full of water, with sticks leading up from the ground to the rim, and another stick laid across the top. Then, sprinkle a layer of sunflower seeds over the surface of the water. When the squirrels bail off to get some seeds, they're trapped and eventually drown.
Is it humane? No. Is it effective? Yes.
They're vermin.

Another method that's been purported to be effective is to fasten two boards together in an "L" shape, with the horizontal leg 3-4 ft long, fasten this to the trunk of a tree, and screw one of those big rat traps to the far end.
When ol' Br'er Bushytail comes gallivantin' down the trunk of the tree, he's just GOT to run out to the end of that board to investigate, and SNAP! you got him.
