Snow is melting rapidly the last three days. Snow melted away from
the trailing black raspberries I got last spring. They are a mystery
variety. I had some berries last summer and they tasty. They did
easily live through the winter except the voles chewed on them. I put
mouse poison next to them last fall. Too many voles. I'll put out
traps for them today and try to wipe them out. I'm disappointed but
the raspberries should make it and put up more canes. Next fall I'll
cover them with wire mesh. I have six varieties of black raspberries
now growing under lights. By varieties I mean wild blackberries from
six states. I'm looking for varieties that will grow here.
Commercial varieties are not hardy enough but wild varieties have a
better chance since I know the hardiness of commercial varieties. It
is possible to discover a more hardy black raspberry from wild
populations.
