Last summer the few Illini Hardy blackberry plants I have had for
years without flowers or fruit sent up canes which flowered heavily
much to my surprise. They produced about a pint of ripe
blackberries. Pitiful further south but great in zone 2. The canes
kept flowering until first heavy frost killed flowers and green
fruit. I bent canes down to the ground so the snow covered them.
Today the snow melted away from canes. Surprised to see green buds
on over-wintered canes. So the first year canes did survive winter
for first time. Maybe I'll get a heavier crop of blackberries this
summer. I'll cover canes with landscape fabric because it will
certainly frost on canes before it warms up. Last frost here usually
in second week in May.
