Just a thought.. I have not tried this. Bend the metal double and punch the
hole?

Subject: [NAFEX] permanent tree labels

Hello All,
I am making my "permanent" labels from pieces of aluminum flashing that
I get at the hardware store or building center. I cut it into label
sized pieces, punch a hole near one end with a heavy leather punch, or
drill a hole (1/4" or so) through a stack of them. Then I use a metal
letter and number punch set (that I got at a garage sale) to stamp the
name of the tree on the label. I use scrap insulated copper electrical
wire (from an electrician friend) to fasten the labels to the tree or
bush. So far they are working well. I think that the weak point may be
the possibility of the tag tearing out by the hole, so I am making the
holes a bit farther in from the end than I was at first. They take a
bit of time to make, stamping each letter or number individually, but
they should last a long time.
