I will demonstrate my lack of knowledge here... but what is this "too late
for pomes and too early for stone fruit" stuff about? My grafting
classes/grafting friends have never mentioned a timing difference for the two
types of fruit trees.

Usually by that time it is too late for pome field grafts and too early for
stone fruits for me anyway, so I just don't plant the garden that day.
