Hello,

I've had loquats outside in the ground in somewhat protected spots for 2
winters now, and most of them have survived.
They say that the flowers and fruit are killed around 28 degrees, but the
tree itself has withstood close to zero a few times and a lot of lows teens
and wind chill. The leaves are all brown and dead each spring like a
winter-burned magnolia but it revives.

Fruiting in a container: a seven year old seedling is fruiting this year for
the 1st time in a 7 or 10 gallon pot. It is 6 feet tall.

They are graft compatible on pears. You might try grafting some on an
established pear to get it into bearing. The usual problem with them isn't
survival, it's that they bloom in mid winter - December through January.

I bought five Evans or Bali cherries four years ago. Two died the first
winter. Other three are barely and grown little with branches dying each
winter. There are reports that American stock is on Mazza4d roots.

I have 5 of them, all of them doing well, but they are 5 years old & have yet
to set any fruit. Very odd. A very small amount of flowers.

Ernie,
The only US source that I'm aware of(there may be others) for Evans/Bali is
St. Lawrence Nurseries - and they sell theirs as tissue-cultured, own-root
specimens. I planted one 10 years or so ago, and it suckers profusely - I've
given away numerous 'starts' of it; the original has been on its way out,
declining, for several years, but I've got several vigorous sizeable plants
that I never got around to moving that can easily take its place.

Mine (which are from St. Lawrence Nurseries) all started suckering
last year after the 4th year, literally 100s of suckers. I didn't
realize these were on their own roots, so yr saying these are all Bali
clones...?

I paint my trees with a mixture of spray lime (dolomite), water and a bit of
latex, but NOT the whole tree and buds, just the trunk, from the base all
the way to the first lateral branch, in the Fall. This is the way it is
traditionnally done in Europe although I don't believe it was latex paint
but just spray lime and water. There is a dual purpose: slowing down
blooming in the Spring by cooling the tree and protecting the trunk against
sunburn.? Just paint the mixture on,? you make an awful mess spraying latex
paint on the surroundings, yourself and your clothes.
A mulch applied early Spring also slows down blooming.

My Bali trees have a few flowers but no cherries. No suckering and
poor growth. I am disappointed because I read how wonderful and
hardy Bail is. Bali originated in Canada but I read the American
version is not on own roots. I don't think Mazzard is hardy enough.
There are probably different versions of Bali on different roots.
There is a small nursery about 40 miles from me. The owner imports
some stock from Winnipeg in the spring. She said it is a hassle to
get import certificates but Canadian nursery is better for this area.
I'll track her down and ask her to import Bali this spring.
