I think that is a good plan. Female kiwi do need proper pruning for good fruit production, but that should not matter for males. Another benefit is the shade from the trees, which will reduce the heat stress in summer. My argutas are out in full sun, and really suffer in the heat in late summer. In a tree, the vine can find its comfort zone. The shading and mass of the trees can also help delay bud break in spring, reducing frost problems. In the wild, Actinidia do grow in trees, but usually in thick forest humus and not a grass covered lawn. As long as you maintain plenty of mulch around the root zone, I think this will work well.

I'll be building a pergola for my two planned female kiwis, but I'm considering letting the male climb an otherwise useless little group of trees. Is there any reason not to do this? I don't care how high it gets, since it won't have any fruit to reach. Am I correct in assuming that it will bloom without any fancy pruning? I know the roots will compete, but I assume that the kiwi has some way of dealing with this, since isn't this how it grows in the wild?
