Which species are folks talking about? In any case, the Plants for a Future database is a good place to check for the uses of something.

Box elder is basicly a giant weed. It has no value for anything, not even firewood. It grows near streams and does stablilize the banks but so do some Oaks which have many uses.

What kind of product do you get from box elders.  I tap sugar maples 
with the kids at school.  We have lots of box elders but never tapped them.
