They are the major wild berry fruit in Newfoundland. We in Nova Scotia have
wild blueberies;
they have bakeapples. Any Newfie grocery will carry bakeapple jam, so they
are sufficiently
abundant in Nfld. that they constitute a significant commercial production.
The other region where they grow in quantity is in Scandanavia (where they
are known as
cloudberries rather than bakeapples.) They do need swampy conditions to grow
(muskeg),
and I would suspect that the Prairies would be too dry for their liking.
