Here in Houston zone 9b, (we think we are southeast since we are humid and Gulf)--

I have a lot of experience with muscadines. The best flavored varieties are Ison (pollinator) and Darlen (Darlene) overall. They probably will work in North Carolina.

For bunch grapes, I would recommend Mortensen Hardy. It has about two seeds and seems to be very PD resistant (as Dr Mortensen designed it), and tasty. From the same program as Orlando but much bigger grapes and sweeter. I seem to have gotten the triploid mutation and so named it. You can get it from Edible Landscaping in Afton VA.

I bag grapes and other fruit before they turn color in cheap bags made from fiberglass window screening (Home Depot). Use scissors to cut strips. Make it double think. Staple 3 sides. Very quick and durable.

Fix on fruit with wooden clothespins. No holes.

I am finally getting my arbor built. I am planning on trying 2 varieties
of grapes that I have selected for: low care in my hot, humid climate
and for fresh eating, cooked fruit items, and maybe preserves if I get
ambitious. I plan on only using Surround for insect control (Japanese
beetles are a perennial problem for me). I am currently favoring Cowart,
a disease-resistant muscadine, and am considering the seedless Concord.
I grew up loving the seeded Concord in the northeast, I am wondering how
the seedless will do.

Any thoughts?
