Has anyone tasted Sorbus Rabina mountain ash? Is it worth growing
it?
Is it worth eating? I was ready to order honeyberries but changed my
mind after reading your comments.

If you are planning to graft this spring, you will actually gain a year over
waiting to do summer budding. I've grafted plums and they do fine, but not
peaches. Well, I've grafted plum onto peach, so I was close. You can also
do chip buds in the spring, you just wait for the bark to slip before doing
them. It's only a matter of a few weeks later than when you can start
grafting. Donna

I'm starting to make files of where people in the US can get old apple
varieties nursery trees, r/s for zones 2-3-4, etc., so I just have to
attach a file when I'm telling the enquirer that I can't sell him trees,
etc.

I'd like to start a file on where a customer can get small numbers of
r/s in the US.

I know of Raintree Nursery, but can you give me any more sources of
small numbers of r/s in the US?

The most recent enquiry is from North Carolina.

Oh, yes, I have another person asking about seeds of r/s e.g. Beautiful
Arcade, Ranetka, Antonovka. She sounds like a Home Gardener and she is
in Canada

I've had it. It's about the texture of a slightly dry blueberry with a
sort of apple-like flavor. The huge umbels of berries do make them
easy to pick, at least. Never had any cooked, but they might work if
used like Amelanchier, based on the raw taste.

Yes, it is true that spring grafting of peaches isn't as successful as
grafting other fruits but you will increase your chance of success by
covering the whole graft with parafilm. Parafilm holds the plant's moisture
in so it doesn't dry out as quickly. The new shoot comes right out through
the parafilm. Anymore I always graft my stone fruits using parafilm or
similar material. A M Leonard has rolls of plastic material which I have
used too. Parafilm is stretchy and works very well.

Like Sam I prefer budding in the summer but most of the time if I am getting
a new variety it will be in the early spring at which time I will have to
graft.

Any hints on peach grafting? I intend to try some this spring. Someone
mentioned that it is hard. I am gradually expanding my grafting repertory and
would like any suggestions people have. I've done other stone fruit apricot
and plum as well as apples pear pawpaw and mulberry. What are the
differences, similarities?

Martha

How do supplement boron? Do you just get borax at the hardward store and
sprinkle it on? Is there some source that is designed specifically for
agricultural use?

Thanks!

For small quantities of rootstock, try Firdale Nursery, Beaverton, Oregon.
503-628-2755.
They are a small family-operated business and I've been pleased with their
products and service. And price.
But do not ask for Bud 9's this year. They are sold out.
