Barbara:

You can indeed grow it to perfection in VA.  However it has no disease resistance that I'm aware of, nor does York (one of its parents).
Root suckers are generated by the rootstock the top is grafted to.  Among the worst to sucker is M7 and some seedlings.  Many other common types don't sucker much at all.

If you want a larger tree, I'd suggest MM111 which is resistant to most soil-borne diseases, well anchored and very drought tolerant.

If you want a smaller tree, I'd suggest Bud. 9 which requires staking (as do all dwarf types) but has some resistance to many diseases and is drought tolerant.

Hi Ed and all. I wondered if the name implied a PA growth.  Ed, do you
know anything about its attributes? I am in zone 6b Northern VA-this
might be a good one to grow--I was certainly very impressed.

I assume it will grow in my area as I am not that far from PA. I am
wondering about disease resistance and suckering from the roots
primarily.  I will also do some research on the PA ag sites as well.

Thanks, Barbara

Barbara:

It originated from PennState University many years back.  It is
either
a cross with York Imperial (or, more likely a chance seedling from
York).
And I should say it is a far better apple than York.
