Hudson's Golden Gem has excellent flavor and texture. However, in our area, it is highly susceptible to all the common apple diseases. I would not recommend it for the mid-Atlantic area.

Alan: It was my single personal favorite amongst various russet types and you've described its flavor perfectly. In many years we had various degrees of cracking early in the season which later appeared to be "healed sutures". In years when they didn't crack they were simply beautiful in their uniformity. Also it has one of the healthiest foliages I've ever seen on an apple, although I doubt that it is genetically disease resistant (had a regular pesticide program). Duane Green (at UMass) did an extensive trial on this one back in the early 90s for roadside marketing and I think he recently published something on that trial. ed

For the last couple seasons I've been very impressed with the quality of Hudson's Golden Gem. It is very rich, quite sweet with an unusual crunchy texture. This deeply russeted apple is pear-like but distinctly apple never the less. It's a little like Golden Russett and looks like a more conical version of that apple but seems easier to grow- I think it would be equal to G R in creating a distinctly rich apple cider once you had more than you could use for fresh eating. It's probably the most unusual apple I grow.
I am describing it as grown in Zone 6 and imagine it might be excessively sweet in more southern climes. I'm interested in other members experience with this apple. _______________________________________________ nafex mailing list nafex@lists.ibiblio.org
