Lee,  I see where you are going with this.  The surface tension of water can be hard to break when you get to the insect level.  By adding the soap, you reduce the surface tension and facilitate the water "wetting" the ants and soaking the colony structures.  I'm going to try this one out, as well as get some DE to try.
