There is another consideration. Often there must be a minimum cash income from a piece of property for it to be considered a farm for various purposes: cheaper water, perhaps cheaper taxes. This is the case in this part of Canada, and I remember reading that it would be a good idea for two subsistence farmers to sell to each other so that they could benefit from this law. I can't remember whether this was in Harrowsmith (Canadian) or Mother Earth News (American).

A nearby friend with ten acres meets the required minimum by selling plants, and is able to get her water at farm rates.
