I was much cheered on my arrival by the warden at the gate, who had to
take particulars about me. He asked my religion, and I replied
'agnostic.' He asked how to spell it, and remarked with a sigh: 'Well,
there are many religions, but I suppose they all worship the same God.'
This remark kept me cheerful for about a week. - Bertrand Russell,

I received this request for information:
I live in Idaho Falls, idaho and am looking for an asian pear tree that will grow well here. have seen a few in town, we live about 3 miles out.

have had the tougher skinned pears, skin is bitter, and the whiter more transparent skinned pear, where everything is sweet. Could the latter pear grow successfully in our area?

I have never seen an asian pear tree at a nursery here. Would you please help me in this matter. i really like to eat them.

Anyone familiar with this area and can tell me how to respond to this person? I am assuming that they are talking about the Shinseiki or Nijisseiki Asian pear.

Thanks,

Jerry,

Are the rootsuckers from the B9 or are they scattered seedlings from drops since they "pulled" up so easily?
Are all of the B9 trees planted with the graft union above the top of the soil line, or are the rootsuckers actually from the scion and not the rootstock?

Just some questions I would need answers to if I were a buyer considering buying from you.

I would like to graft some b-9 this spring but there is none available.I was out today and saw 500 rootsuckers on my older b-9 trees.I pulled some pencil sized ones up and they broke off nice with better roots than ones from the nursery.I think this might be the cats meow.Maybe I can sell them. What do you experts think? skip s. z5

Bob,
I live in USDA Zone 4b, along the WI-IL border in a fairly harsh climate, much like Idaho. I grow Shinseki and Korean Giant Asian pears easily. The Shinseki ripen in mid-August, which is perfect for my climate when the first frost may come the third or fourth week of Sept. We've had frosts as early as Sept. 6. The Korean Giant has yet to bear, so I cannot speak about its quality. Shinseki is superb. Skin and flesh are sweet, crisp and juicy. They store well, too. At least, they store long enough for me to eat them all! I get sort of piggy about Asian pears, as they are such a treat. Because I don't have other pears and the Korean Giant has yet to flower, I pollinate the Shinseki blossoms with callery pear flowers. There are a number of ornamentals in the neighborhood, and I beg a few stems of blossoms. I attach them to the Shinseki with clothes pins, and the bees take care of the rest. I purchased my trees from Stark Bros. online four years ago. Hope this is of
some help to your friend.
Doreen Howard
