Back Pack Sprayer,
I've got to go with Jim Fruth on this one.
We tried a couple of back pack sprayers and
then opted for a 25 gal battery operated.
We use organic sprays and keeping them mixed is a chore.
A video of the Bunny Hop with a BPS on might be a keepsake.
The Batt. Operated is mounted on the mower deck behind the little tractor
it mixes everything on the way to the orchard.
We have about 30 trees and @ 20 gals. works out.

My first suggestion is to become member of the Cider Digest. This is a
great place to get information on cider - like the equivalent of this list,
but oriented on cider only. It comes in digest form, about once a week.
Send ONLY articles for the digest to cider@talisman.com.
Use cider-request@talisman.com for subscribe/unsubscribe/admin requests.
When subscribing, please include your name and a good address in the
message body unless you're sure your mailer generates them.
Archives of the Digest are available at www.talisman.com/cider

To answer more directly to your question, I would say your best cider
apples will be those that grow well and mature to their best at your place.
I make excellent cider with Cortland apples, but don't try it, Cortland
doesn't make good cider down South in warmer climate.

The best cider will generally come from old unfertilised standard trees,
small and scabby apples, late maturing apples that contain high level of
sugar (aim for a gravity of 1.060 or better). You need to think differently
when you grow apples for cider.

True cider apples, bittersweets in particular, are nice and, for me, bring
some welcomed diversity in aroma and taste - however, I don't find them
essential for making an excellent cider. In my cold climate, the English
cider apples have a hard time to mature properly. Actually, I get better
results with a chance seedling that I found which is a mild bittersweet - I
call it the "Douce de Charlevoix" (could be translated as Charlevoix
Sweet). This is to say that if you look around you, you might find a better
cider apple for your site than any of the official cider apples.

Good luck!

Jim Erdman said, "That's the right page--go to the left hand side, go the

NAFEX."

Jim,
That's really confusing; how would anyone know unless someone got 'taken
by the hand' and shown, like you did for me? But there is one GREAT BIG
PROBLEM! I clicked on the list arrow, scrolled down to nafex.org,
highlighted it and it came up. Then I clicked on 'Search' and this is what
I got: "Your search - Search our domains... - did not match any documents."
Now what! And we want new members to wade through this maze?

My guess would be similar to Northern Spy since Northern Spy x Merton 793
are its parents.

Dennis,

He meant, what does the fruit from the rootstock taste like if you don't
graft anything on it?

I've been tapping (up to 5,000) trees since 1971 and have tried alot of
different methods. I'm available for questions. I make syrup from four
different kinds of maple and have made syrup from non-maples too.

Do you want a REALLY light-weight sprayer?
I've got a battery operated 12 gallon sprayer that I pull around like a
kid's 'Radio Flyer' toy wagon. I bought the sprayer from NorthernTool.com
(They send me a print copy). I bought the sprayer intended for spot
spraying that would be pulled by an ATV. I also bought some wagon wheels
and took it all to a welder asking him to make it into a 'pull behind' like
a child's wagon. The battery platform is mounted on what would have been
the drawbar and the 12 volt deep-cell battery is held down with a bungee
cord.
Boy am I glad I didn't buy a backpack sprayer!

Actually, if you just type NAFEX in the box above the domains, leave the
domain www.ibiblio.org and hit search you will get about 6,000 hits.
Alternatively, you can just go directly to the archives and look there.
You can go to http://www.ibiblio.org/ecolandtech/ and scroll down to (or
search for) NAFEX. Note the link to the "old" YAHOO archives is not
longer functional, but there is a way to get to them if you really feel
the need.

Why don't we make our own website and eliminate the confusion connected
with www.ibiblio.org ?

If each of we 1,500 NAFEX members were to contribute just another two
cents per month, we could pay for our own web page ($30/month is what my
server quoted me).
