Jim,
On our farm we have an abundance of " Box Elder " trees or Ash Leaf maples.
We struck on the idea of tapping them. Best maple syrup we've had.
Now I look at Box Elders in a whole different light.
We had another experience like this with Canadian thistles. Tried everything
to get rid of them and then two years ago during a drought our bees made "Thistle Honey",
the best honey we ever tasted.

If no one has done so yet, take a look at http://www.virtualorchard.net and see how there system is set up. Virtual Orchard is made up of most of the professionals in the apple industry from around the world and I subscribe to their list. The list uses the same type of e-mail list as this one, as well as great archives. The only thing that I seem to be seeing throughout this discussion is that some of us would like the ability to search a thread or archives on topics. I would like to see both the e-mail list and possibly the ability to search topics in an archive. That's where a bulletin board such as ikonboard would come in. Let me stick my neck out and say that I would be willing to host such a bulletin board and cover the cost of the server (since I already lease a server) for those of us that would like to have the benefits of the bulletin board. If this is something that many are interested in, let me know and we can work out the logistics off-list.

Another consideration, boards allow you to look at a topic thread.
When seeking a topic thru the search element on the board you can go back to any prior postings and make comments. from current topics to very old ones.
With an e-mail list, if you missed a posting on a topic of interest you have two choices,
>forget it
>try to do a list search.
I doubt if many people use the list search to pick out all postings on a specific topic, it is just too difficult.
Also, boards can be set up by areas of interest.
If you want to view and contribute to 'prunus' or 'malus' the topics can be separated.
Regarding bandwidth, the boards are text friendly and have minimal download time even on ISP dial up service.
Yes, some people are lonely and want lots of e-mail.
I have a hard time separating the wheat from the chaff.

I hate to interrupt this discussion with a fruit question (that's just a
little joke, I assure you), but...
With last year's nasty April freeze in mind - and Nebraska's normally
unpredictable weather - I'd like to delay breaking dormancy as much as
possible this spring. So far, it's been a remarkably uniform winter,
with some snow cover (not a lot) and below-normal temperatures almost
all the time since the first of December. We usually have warm spells,
but not this year. Of course, that can change at any time.
I've read that both pruning and dormant oil spray encourage plants to
break dormancy, earlier than they would otherwise. But I've also read
that dormant spray can react with some fungicides, so you need to keep
them separate by a couple of weeks (sulfur and captan, anyway). Last
year (my first year at this), it seemed to make sense to prune first,
and then spray with dormant oil, since the trees would be more open -
and require much less spray - after pruning. This year, I'm struggling
to reconcile all these different requirements. (Note that I have a big
variety of different fruit trees, bushes, and vines, which just makes
things harder.)
Any recommendations? I've got awhile to go yet, but I want to be ready.
How late can I wait on these things? And what order would you recommend?
I need to prune and to spray with dormant oil, and I'd also thought to
do a dormant spray of lime sulfur (apparently not within two weeks -
either side - of the oil?). But if I want to do all of these as late as
possible, is that going to work?
I'd appreciate some advice. Last year, I pruned on March 7 and sprayed
with dormant oil on March 8. That was too early, I believe. But then, we
had a *very* warm March last year. Either way, I want to delay my plants
from breaking dormancy - and blooming - as much as I can. At the very
least, I don't want to do anything to speed it up.
Thanks much,
Bill

I belong to Deirdre's list-serve, and to some other yahoo groups (most
of which I don't get emails from), and I hadn't noticed ads. Upon
checking out a few groups just now, there are some short links and ads
without graphics at the bottom of the page (but I seldom scroll that far
down), and once in awhile, at certain points in navigating the site, a
banner ad appears across the top. I don't recall ever noticing other ads
in the emails that I get from the groups.
Sorry to prolong a topic that seems to be approaching "off-topic".

I run a list-serv at Yahoo groups and they started slowly adding ads and
now it is almost a regular feature of each email. It is annoying and I
explain to people that these are not our group's endorsements.

Same here. I was wondering about that. I don't get ads from any of my
Yahoo groups. Some people do?

Bill,
Here in any garden center, up to a few years ago, I could buy "Combined
dormant spray" where you mix lime sulphur with dormant oil in the same
spray. Now, they don't sell it anymore because of some idiot regulation,
and I have to buy a bottle of each. On the instruction, there is still
written the dosage for the combined spray.
Why would you have to separate the 2 sprays by 2 weeks of time?

Re, "Having read several comments about the listserv which NAFEX uses, the
current technology used by NAFEX is antique. The most groups do not use
e-mail for delivery. Rather they have a current flow of information by topic
using a board typically used by blogs."
Antique or not, I've tried the "modern" blogs like the Garden
Web,et.al., boards but I find I miss much of what there is to learn there.
I much prefer the way we do it here on NAFEX.

Does anyone, besides me, make maple syrup?
Is Maple a 'legal' subject with NAFEX?
