Ernest, I know that M. rubra, the native red mulberry, grows naturally
along many of the streams in eastern and central Kansas.
M. alba, the Russian or Tartarian mulberry, is used extensively in
shelterbelts and windbreaks throughout the state. However, birds have
scattered the seed so that it is commonly seen in alley ways, in ditches
and along roads as well as in uncultivated and ungrazed areas throughout
much of the state.
As someone else pointed out, M. rubra, M. alba and the hybrid all can
produce black fruit. Depending on the tree, M. alba produces fruit that
ranges from a creamy white to pink to rosy red to black. It was one of
the few fruits that we had on our farm in west-central Kansas (near
Hays). Mom made jam and pies from the Russian mulberries, often mixing
them with rhubarb. We also ate them fresh as a dessert with thick,
sweet cream and sprinkled with sugar. I made homemade wine. But most
of the fruit our trees produced probably went down the hatch when we
were picking them for her. Many of our neighbors did not have mulberry
trees, so they'd pick them at our place. Those Volga German ladies also
used them in Kuchen and in Maultaschen, a filled pasta similar to sweet
vareniki or pierogi. -- Sam Brungardt, St. Paul, Minn.

Mulberry tree was growing about 30 miles west of Leavenworth, Kansas,
Fruit was black and red, long and tasty. The reason I called it a black
mulberry because I was told that when I was eating them. I can't recall
the shape of the leaves but the tree was large. It was the only
mulberry tree I saw there.
