- Subject: [NAFEX] Encouraging sweet cherry to branch
- Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2008 09:47:00 +1100
Hi All,
My two sweet cherry trees have been in the ground two seasons now and I
would like them to branch more than they are doing. I didn't do a
winter prune for fear of disease and they branched nicely from the
dormant apical rosette. But as I want these to be scaffold branches I
don't want them all coming out of the same place on the trunk as that
will be quite weak. I've tried summer tipping, and tipping with leaf
removal but the leaders just keep on keeping on.
How do you guys make cherries branch and will I get better branching if
I do a winter prune? I want a large bush not a 20ft high tree.
Thanks
Karl
